Babette Blanket CAL – Annemie Mentz

Ok, let’s get started!

I’m only going to give basic guidelines here, and the rest is up to you.  If you get stuck, please inbox me or post something on Playing Hooky/Haak uit!, as I’m sure somebody else might also have the same/similar issues.

Go to:  http://gingerschatz.blogspot.com/2011/09/tutorial-crazy-patchwork-klimt-blankets.html

Download and print the tutorial of the Klimt blanket on the blog.  Read carefully through the instructions before you begin.  This will just make it easier before you start.  You can also print this document with the additional info.

Blocks used

You can use any kind of block that can easily be made bigger (have a look through Jan Eaton’s – 200 Crochet blocks).  The tutorial gives a pattern for a solid square, but I’m using granny squares.  The only thingyou need to keep in mind is that your blocks need to fit together (have a look at the assembly of the pattern on the tutorial).  Therefore, you need to make sure that:

2 X 2-rnd blocks = 1 X 4-rnd block
2 X 4-rnd blocks = 1 X 8-rnd block
3 X 2-rnd blocks = 1 X 6-rnd block
Etc…….

I found that my 2-round blocks were too big, and had to change to a thinner crochet needle (used 4mm for everything, but 3,5mm for just the 2-round blocks).  This was the only hickup I had so far.

Herewith another pattern for a solid block square:

Hook size: 4mm (or smaller for the 2-rnd blocks)

Gauge: A two-round square = 4,5cm

Abbreviations

beg – beginning
ch – chain
slst – slip stitch
dc – double crochet (langbeen)
sp – space
rep – repeat

Two-Round Square

Rnd 1:Ch 4 (counts as ch 1, dc), (dc,[ch2, 3dc] 3 times, ch 2, dc) all in 4thch from hook, join with slst in 3rdch of beg ch-4.  Do not turn.

Rnd 2:Ch 3, dc in next dc, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in each of next 3 dc**, rep from * to ** twice more; (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in last ch-2 sp, ending dc in next dc, join with slst in top of beg ch-3.

Fasten off.

Four-Round Square

Rnds 1 and 2: Rep Rnds 1 and 2 of two-round square.

Subsequent rounds of larger squares

Ch 3, dc in each dc across to next ch-2 sp, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in each dc to next ch-2 sp**, rep from * to ** twice more, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in last ch-2 sp, ending dc in each dc to end of rnd, join with slst in top of beg ch-3.

Fasten off.Colours

This tutorial suggests a maximum of 12 colours, but you can use more or less colours.  As I said, I’m using 18 colours.

Wolle Babette

And here my left-brain side came out full force!  We bought some wine glasses and I

used the boxes to organize my wool.

Number of blocks

There are two ways to approach this blanket:

1.                  Crochet all the blocks first, and then put it together, strip by strip.

2.                  Crochet the blocks per strip, and then put it together.

I’ve decided to make all the blocks first, as I’m using 18 colours and would like to have everything done before starting to put it together.

Here is a table of how many blocks you’ll need:
